The study found that each watt of solar energy adds an average of $ 4 to the value of the house in California and an average of $ 3 per watt elsewhere. This represented an average price increase of $ 20,000 in California ($ 4 x 5,000W for the average system size) and $ 15,000 outside California ($ 3 x 5,000W).

Although the real estate market was in a recession, solar houses maintained their value. The other developments in the study also sold their solar homes approximately 17% faster than non-solar ones. The floor plans and the specifications of each home in the market were exactly the same. The only difference — solar. If the solar energy was already installed and the price was taken into account, the buyers were willing to pay more and took the opportunity to own their own solar system.

Another interesting finding is that these houses were not as solar as they could be. Most had smaller 2.5 kW photo-voltaic systems (most homes need a 5kW system to power all their appliances) but their energy bills are still reduced by 54% compared to their neighbors with network power. This shows that solar energy should be an industry standard for new construction. Even if developers implement smaller and cheaper systems, it can attract buyers quickly who are eager to reap the benefits of energy savings and independence.

Japan’s Solar City

When we hear “Japan” the first things that come to mind are sushi, cars and technology, and for a good reason. Here in America, Japanese technology is very popular together with Japanese cars.

In Ota City, located just 80 kilometers (roughly 50 miles) north of Tokyo, there is a small Solar Powered town called Pal Town. Every house and building has a solar panel or more for their use. Habitats of this town can be paid up to ¥5000 or $50 from the local power company.

This town is located in Japan’s sunniest area, and the Japanese government lost no time on taking advantage of the sun by giving Solar Panels to the residents of the city.

If people moving to this city are buying Solar Powered houses at the current market price they could recover the cost of the building plus ¥2,000,000 or $20,000 in two or three decades.

Kazuo Nakashima, Ota’s housing development manager says that the biggest challenge is the high equipment cost in spreading the Eco-friendly system.

But a new study published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives and led by MIT economist Christopher Knittel and his colleagues at the University of Chicago suggests that reducing costs is not enough, and that if taxes are not started on emissions carbon, we will not stop using fossil fuels.

If we do not adopt new policies, we will not stop fossil fuels, so we need new carbon tax policies and invest more money in renewable energy.

While renewable energy has made promising gains in recent times (the cost of solar energy decreased by about two-thirds between 2009 and 2014), new drilling and extraction techniques, such as hydraulic fracturing and oil production from of tar sands, it also makes fuel cheaper and increases the amount of oil and gas. In the United States alone between 2000 and 2014, oil reserves have expanded by 59% and natural gas reserves have expanded by 94%.

Although the cost of renewable energy has decreased significantly in the last decade, solar energy is still approximately twice as expensive as natural gas. In addition, electric vehicles are also more expensive than fuel cars. This trend of cheaper costs of renewable energy is still surpassed by fossil fuels.

Solar energy is a topic of great interest for those seeking a clean alternative to power their homes. Producing your own energy seems like the pinnacle of a science fiction novel or something straight out of the Jetsons.

Before explaining what solar energy is, we must talk about solar panels and how they convert that energy.So let’s start with what most people are familiar about when looking at solar panels: The panels themselves.

[heading header_type=”h2″]What is a panel?[/heading]

The panels are the translucent blue or black display most people are familiar with. These panels contain small units in them, called solar cells or photovoltaic cells. These cells are manufactured from silicon, which also serves as an efficient semiconductor.

The silicon is the one that absorbs the photons (the particle attributed to light and electromagnetic radiation). The color is due to the type of silicon or polycrystalline used, alongside the anti-reflective coating that allows a heightened absorbing capacity.

The photovoltaic cells, which just mean converting the sun’s light into electricity, link up together comprising the solar panel. Now, the process can sound a little complicated for those who aren’t well versed in physics, but basically put, solar panels divert the electrons from the atoms allowing electricity to flow. Let’s look into it in full detail.

The solar cells are made up of two semiconductors, the P-Layer, and the N-Layer. The positive layers or P-Layers have extra holes that allow the positive charges to flow. This layer adds atoms and is usually created using an element called boron. Due to baron’s lack of one electron needed to form a bond with the silicon atoms, the vacancy hole is made.

The N-Layer silicon is made by including atoms that can have a single electron more in its exterior level than the silicon. This is called Phosphorus. Phosphorus is a chemical element that contains 5 electrons in its exterior energy level instead of 4. This allows it to bond with the silicon minus one electron. Because of this process, the silicon is free to move in the silicon structure.

Through a slew of various operations each of the positive holes and excessive amounts of electrons from each semiconductor, it creates an area around the junction known as the depletion zone. In simple terms, the depletion zone is where the electrons fill the holes.

Now that the P-Layer contains negatively charged ions and the N-Layer contain positive ions, this causes an internal electric field that does not allow the electrons in the N-Layer to fill any holes in the P-Layer.

So now that we have a flow, the wires connecting the two layers are a pathway for the electrons to move freely towards the circuit to recombine with the holes. And this, ladies and gentlemen is now an electrical current which can now be diverted to power anything. The electricity can now be sent to a circuit.

This can seem a little complex to most people, don’t worry, it is. That is the science behind the morphing of something so casual as sunlight, into useable, clean energy to power buildings and electronics.
